Another weekend has flown by. Week two of the NFL Preseason is all but over, going into week three and counting down to the first regular season games. We’re getting into one of my favorite times of the year. I love the fall and football season. With this awful heat wave and drought we’ve been going through in my area, it will be nice to welcome in cooler weather. Of course the last time we had a drought like this, we had the mother of all ice storms a week after Thanksgiving. Hopefully history won’t repeat itself in this case.

So while I am on the subject of football and professional football is in the spotlight lately due to Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, I want to take a few minutes to comment. First and foremost, Michael Vick is a thug. He has always been a thug and a showboat. The things that he’s been into have only recently come to light with this dog fighting ring. Vick, if found guilty should do some major prison time and be barred from the NFL for life. There is absolutely no excuse for what he is accused of.

A friend of mine would argue that most NFL players are thugs and would be gangsters. I’d like not to believe that and that most NFL players are stand up guys who do what they do for the love of the game. But we all know that that isn’t true either. The NFL along with other professional sports have had their share of “bad boys” lately. The NBA and MLB have had their negative press. Some would argue that the NBA is by far the worst for player antics and off the court scandels.

But I think that one bad apple truly spoils the bunch in this case. When the first instance of bad behavior and accusations of drug use is overlooked or swept under the rug, it sets a bad example for future players to get away with worse. Former Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams caught four times with drugs in his system. That’s four times the NFL has caught Ricky doing drugs and each time, after a slack punishment is allowed to come back and play. And maybe Ricky Williams hits a little too close to home for me because he was playing for my favorite team and in my humble opinion let the entire team down with this selfish antics.

If you give someone enough money, over time I imagine they would become bored and just look for stupid things to do with their new found wealth. Most people don’t fall into crime and drugs. But there are always a few that do. Then add some level of celebrity to that equation and that’s how a scandle is born. Fueled by the ever quickening flow of news and information, personal indiscretions are blasted out into the public eye faster than ever before.

Whether they want to believe or admit, sports players are role models. Children see them and look up to them. Their antics, if plastered all over tabloids, TV and newspapers can have a lasting effect on kids and adults alike. They should be mindful of the image they present to the public. At the same time, these guys are professionals and they should act accordingly. They should take resposibility for their actions and learn that if they screw up, there will be consequences.

And with that said, let’s get to your geektastic news for today.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau has confirmed that an official version of the footage that was shown at the San Diego Comic-Con will be online soon.

I hear you all loud and clear. You want to see the footage that we brought to SDCC. Why not post it in HD instead of having everyone download a grainy bootleg? I agree. I am trying to get a version out to you ASAP. This is a big movie, however, and it takes time to get the proper approvals from all parties involved.

I am happy to report that both Marvel and Paramount have agreed to get a version of the footage out to you very soon. I will report the specifics when I get them. Thanks for your enthusiasm and patience.

Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, opens in theaters on May 2.

Transformers Comes To IMAX

It was bound to happen. With the huge success of Michael Bay’s Transformers, already reaching $633.9 million in worldwide ticket sales, it was unavoidable that the hit movie be release in IMAX. On September 21, the movie hits IMAX theaters with additional footage not shown in the original release.

Looks like The Nerd will have to shell out some more coin to go see it again.

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia – Malaysia gave a hero’s send-off Monday to Lucky and Flo, honoring the two DVD-sniffing dogs with medals as they ended a six-month assignment that netted 1.6 million illegal movie discs.

The two black Labradors looked puzzled when a multitude of press photographers’ flash bulbs went off as Malaysia’s deputy trade minister S. Veerasingham placed medals around their necks.

“What they have helped us achieve in such a short time is remarkable,” said Veerasingham. “Malaysia is committed to wiping out piracy and pirates. We will go after them very fast.”

IESB.net reported a rumor that a script for a proposed Justice League of America movie is done and that the movie is moving forward rapidly.

Kiernan and Michele Mulroney’s script has been warmly received at Warner Brothers, and the studio is envisioning the movie as a launching pad for others movies based on The Flash, Wonder Woman, The Green Lantern and Aquaman, as well as a shot in the arm for the Superman franchise, the site reported, citing anonymous studio sources.

The studio wants to start production on Justice League as soon as the first quarter of 2008 for a summer 2009 release, the site reported. That calls into question the timing of an expected sequel to Superman Returns, which is expected to be called The Man of Steel.

MICHAEL VICK PLEADS GUILTY
Source: What Would Tyler Durden Do

Not exactly fun gossip news, but Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has pleaded guilty today to federal charges related to a dogfighting ring. Friday two co-defendants signed statements saying Vick participated in the execution of at least 8 dogs by hanging or drowning them. Breitbart News says:

“Vick is expected to be sentenced next Monday at US District Court here. He could face up to five years in prison and fines of more than 250,000 dollars as a result of the charges.

A grand jury was hearing evidence Monday on more possible charges that could have been filed against Vick, including racketeering gambling charges that might have substantially raised the stakes and possible prison term Vick might face.”

Burn in hell you piece of shit.
