As the Green Lantern series and the War of the Green Lanterns storyline both come to a close there are some rather interesting and unexpected events that took place.

The Guardians decided to punish Hal Jordan for his constant insubordination and running off with a team of unsanctioned lanterns.  Even though his actions had the Corps best interest at heart, the Guardians didn’t see it that way.  As punishment for his indiscretions, Hal is stripped of his ring and kicked out of the Green Lantern Corps.  He is left standing on a roadside back on Earth, with no ring and no idea of his future.

To make matters worse, his successor was even more shocking.  In the midst of battle Sinestro along with other lanterns are forced to remove their rings to prevent being controlled by the renegade Guardian Krona.  When the smoke clears and the remaining lanterns go to put their rings back on, Sinestro is chosen by a green ring and is once again a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

This is a very interesting turn of events and a bold move for DC Comics.  A long time and well established villain is now fighting for a good guys.  It’s not unheard of in the world of comics, but to have such a renowned adversary switch sides is a rather gutsy move.  It’s like The Joker suddenly becoming a good guy and fighting alongside Batman.  A hero is nothing without a great villain and Sinestro is one of the best bad guys around.

Since his fall from grace, Sinestro has been a mainstay in the Green Lantern universe as Hal Jordan’s nemesis.  Over the past year or so, DC has shed some light on Sinestro’s background and motivations for leaving the Green Lantern Corps.  They had really taken great care into developing him into a character that readers were interested in and actually started to care about.  It will be interesting to see how things develop for Sinestro now that he wields an emerald ring again.  How long will it take before his interests no longer coincide with the Guardians’?  And what will happen when his duties as a Green Lantern come into conflict with his former corps?

Fear not Hal Jordan fans.  I am quite sure that he will be ring slinging again in the very near future.  You can’t keep a good man down and it won’t be long before we see Hal with a ring on his finger again.  How do I know this you ask?  Well faith in what DC is doing for one thing and the other…Hal Jordan has already been named in the new Justice League lineup starting in September.
